alright...you know the game.  Where on the Flowage?

JeffM, January 06, 2009 - 4:17 PM:
Looking down on the South shore of Chief Lake with Big & Little Banana islands in the distance. If you look really close you can see the battleship at F8.

Dan50, January 06, 2009 - 4:20 PM:
That is Chief Lake on the left. I cant think of the nake of that point...

lg3, January 06, 2009 - 8:31 PM:
A lil off topic...Indiana, did I meet you last season? I know it sounds stupid, but I keep forgetting to ask you when you post. One night in a storm, I was comin back from the fish house and two guys pulled up in a truck looking for directions. we only talked for a couple mins...well...cuz i was very wet by then...and I couldnt make out if the driver said he WAS "Indiana" or that he was FROM Indiana.

Thanks all for the reports from Mille Lacs....again, any info is helpful, even if its not overly encouraging.  What you don't know, however, is that I won on ebay this morning...the failsafe weapon of all MN ice fishermen.  with this in my hand, i may not even need a vexilar.

walleyemaxx, January 05, 2009 - 10:20 PM:
Lar, If you bring the green hornet, you, by law , have to bring ann margeret! No ifs, ands, or butts. Well, no ifs or ands!

Ellie, January 06, 2009 - 11:44 AM:
Hmmmmm....we're going to MN next week. I'll have to get one of those for Jeff. Ebay, hey??

lg3, January 06, 2009 - 1:05 PM:
Ellie, here's another one on ebay

Ellie, January 06, 2009 - 4:04 PM:
Thanks, Lar! You're not grumpy or old but I hope the jigging stick works for you anyway.

lg3, January 06, 2009 - 4:41 PM:

so tonite, i was at my parents and they asked about my next fishing trip.

"Well, in late January after I get a vexilar, Im picking up DancesWithWalleyes, and we're going up to meet WalleyeMaxx and Jigboy on the ice in the upper peninsula."

I know it sounds normal to us ... but do you think they wonder about me...just a little bit?

Hey everyone, anyone have any thoughts on the aquavu underwater carmeras? Maxx I know you love your gadgets have you ever used one?

lg3, January 05, 2009 - 11:46 AM:
Danny, do you mean for ice fishing or open water (or both)? I've heard of some people using them instead of a sonar, but from others I've talked to, it seems they're at quite a disadvantage since they can only see one depth at a time instead of seeing an entire vertical cone. not sure if that was clear or not.

walleyemaxx, January 05, 2009 - 1:54 PM:
Hi dannymac. Yes i have an under water camera. But, that's one gadget i don't use. It takes to long to keep running the camera cord up and down thru the ice and in opes water. With a locator, Just pop the transducer in the water and take an instant reading. A camera slows me down. It is a great toy, but not practical for serious fishing. Hope this helps.

DancesWithWalleyes, January 06, 2009 - 6:23 AM:
I agree with Walleyemaxx, my brother has an underwater camera. He almost never uses it. It is a hassle to use, spinning the cord to get the camera to face the direction you want. Most of the time the water is too murky to see much of anything. Not worth the $$$ in my opinion.

Ellie, January 06, 2009 - 11:42 AM:
We have an Aqua Vu and it's a fun little toy, especially up in Crane Lake where the water is so clear. But, we don't use it at all for actual fishing, just for having fun.

JeffM, January 06, 2009 - 4:26 PM:
Ellie is right. It's fun to use up in Crane lake. But I have used it icefishing a couple of times in Minnesota and it worked really good. The best was on Bowstring Lake. We were able to sight fish watching the screen.

Hi all. A brief synopsis of the weekend of walleye fishing here in the beautiful northwoods. First tho, sorry ellie about the vikings. They really need a QB. A new coach wouldn't hurt either. Fishing here was pretty tough this weekend. Did manage a nice fat 21'er and a total of 8 walleyes and a few perch to boot. All in all, the makings for a good fish fry. The 21'er was released to grow. I don't know why, but pulling walleyes up thru a hole in the ice is always a thrill. The weather didn't cooperate real well, with high pressure most of the weekend, but  still fun to get out. Were lots of people up to enjoy the northwoods for the new years week. I saw about 200 people out on the 2 lakes i fished, and jigboy told me he saw about that many on the one lake he fished. Good to see people here to enjoy the beauty. Had nice conversations on the ice with people too. Always try to help anyone who asks for some advice. Also nice to meet people from different areas of the  tri state area. Before i go, would like to say that lar's nephew roy  looks like a natural ice fisher. Is that your vex lar?

great to hear about and see fish, Maxx. Thanks. i really enjoy your headlamp. i thought mine looked martian, but you have a full on alien on your head! haha. no, not my vex. its Roy's dad's (my brother). will put a vid up from him, too - an actual vex lesson. still savin up for one, here.

Ellie, January 05, 2009 - 12:29 PM:
Thanks for the condolences, Walleymaxx. I was still pretty happy at half time but that 2nd half was a killer. Oh well, as long as the Vikings make it further than the Packers I'm happy! Even if it's only one game further.

walleyemaxx, January 05, 2009 - 1:56 PM:
There's always next year ellie. Packers need new coaches too.

Mille Lacs trip scheduled for Feb 20-22.

expect reports from lg2, lg3, and two brothers.  we have a full fish house, but in case anyone else wants to get a place, there's still availability at Appeldoorns for that weekend.  There will be plenty of Mutt to go around!

Dan H, January 05, 2009 - 7:25 AM:
Hey Lar, I was at Mill Lacs this past weekend and fishing wasnt the greatest. The biggest we brought in was a 25" on a rattle reel. We stayed out of McQuoids on the east side. We also caught a bout a dozen perch. We were fishing right on a reef. One hell of a beautiful area up there though. Dan

lg3, January 05, 2009 - 11:36 AM:
Hi Dan! Happy New Year. Soooo...catching a 25 isnt considered "good enuf" on Mille Lacs? haha Catch anything other than eyes? Mainly minnows? Any info would be helpful.

Dan H, January 05, 2009 - 11:42 AM:
Well they have the slot rule on Mill Lacs. make sure you no it. Happy New year to you as well. Fishing with minnows, mainly rattle reels. I set a few tip-ups, no action. Fishing around 23ft deep, set the hooks about a ft to ft.5 off the bottom. I would stagger them and see what gets the most action. yea mainly just eyes. What days you going up there? Maybe I would drive up there for the day

Brett, January 05, 2009 - 12:00 PM:
Lar, Hate to burst your bubble, but the fishing is very tough on Mille Lacs. This has been the case for the better part of two years. There is an abundance of small perch. They can be seen litterally everywhere on a camera. Because of this, the walleyes are well fed and are not aggressive. I'm not saying you won't catch a few but I would be surprised if your group manages more than 10 walleyes for the whole weekend. Good luck though and please prove me wrong. Also, the folks at Appledorn's are great - nicest on the whole lake in my opinion.

lg3, January 05, 2009 - 5:29 PM:
so...not many, i can deal with. the situation you describe makes me think there are a bunch of big ole fatties in there! (silver lining?)

Brett, January 06, 2009 - 11:46 AM:
There is a stable population of fat 25 and 26-inchers. With three days of fishing, you'll hopefully tie into a few of these. I don't know if you are bringing a four-wheeler or not, but I would highly recommend fishing away from the communities. Fish hard and be mobile during the day and then put the rattle reels down at night in your permament and enjoy some Mutts. I can also almost guarantee an eel pout or two will make a guest appearance during the wee hours of the night. You'll get all excited - thinking its a 5-pound walleye and it ends up being a slimy pout. Should be fun.

had a fun day ice fishing today.  after he got us all set up, nephew Roy taught me how to use a vex, and even a bit about CPR fishing!  ended up with about 20 bluegill and crappie - some right off the bottom, and some down 11 feet in 15 FOW.

The player will show in this paragraph

walleyemaxx, January 04, 2009 - 10:06 AM:
Hey, looks like roy has this jigging with the vex down pretty good. He can fish walleyes with me any time. BUT, he has to lose the hat. You can get arrested in 14 southern states and canada for wearing it! I'll be sure to send roy a good hat, A pridefull packer cheese hat.lol

Ellie, January 04, 2009 - 2:49 PM:
GO VIKINGS!! Game at 3:30 today!
